“What beautiful skin you have,” they said to her. “You look so YOUTHFUL.”
She was all of 70 years old, and had almost died recently. Cancer. It got her all over. She was lucky to be alive.
Her mind went back to when she was in her early teens. All those visits to the Dermatology Clinic at the hospital. All that whiffy sulphur cream that she had to put on her face. It dried like cake on her skin, and it got in her hair and everywhere. Her clothes were a bit odorous too. Spits, they were. Teenage spots. But bad enough to require hospital treatment.
Never in her life had she heard that she had beautiful skin. Words she never expected to hear. Tgey couldn’t mean HER……….could they?
“You only look 40,” they said.
Heidi preened herself. She had on her prized fresh green dress, and felt like a queen. They had called it her “chick dress” when she had bought it when she went into remission from the cancer. Short, tight, and good looking. It had paid off!
