#FOWC – Cruise

FOWC with Fandango — Cruise

Tom and Sandy sat on the hot sand dunes looking out to sea. Anxiously they kept looking at their watches. Soon it would be there. Would it be late or would it be on time? Sandy was trying to hold back her tears. Soon the ship came into view. They watched it cruise out into the open sea, knowing that he would not even know that they were there. He didn’t even know that they cared. In fact he thought that nobody cared. Soon he would be in Holland, starting a new life. Sandy and Tom had wanted to go to the docks and see him off properly and wish him luck, but he had stipulated in no uncertain terms that he wanted no one to see him off.

Raised by his grandparents on a farm, his mother having abandoned him, he had always wondered. Did his mother really care for him? For some reason he had grown up unable to manage his affairs and had married twice, each having been an unfortunate affair. Now, being chased for money that he owed, after his second wife had stolen and got rid of all his money, he had no option but to just get away to some new place where he could start again.

Sandy remembered happy days with him when he was a child. There were only a few years between them, and in the summer they would play together at the farm. Sheets over clothes horses out in the sun made up a tent. Most of the day was spent crawling in and out of it. Those were happy days. Where had it all gone wrong?

As the ship passed by she waved her hankie in the air, knowing that he would not even see her. This was goodbye. Would it be for ever?
